Basil

Basil is cultivated as a kitchen herb. It is very aromatic and is commonly used in tomato sauces or pestos. As well as being tasty to eat, basil is related to the stomach and its related organs. The basil plant takes its name from the Greek word king, suggesting that it was so highly prized that it was considered to be a king among plants. It was also an ingredient used in the oil to anoint kings. It still highly regarded in present-day Greece, both for cooking and as a medicinal herb, and has various popular names, such as ‘joy of the mountains’ and ‘boy’s joy’. Pots of it may be found placed at the foot of the pulpit in Greek churches. Although the plant has naturalized in the Mediterranean and many other parts of Europe, it is a native of Asia, and has a long history of use in Indian traditional a substance used in managing discofort.

Basil Remedy For

As a massage oil, Basil may perhaps not be a popular choice if used alone, but blends well with other oils, especially Lavender. It is very good for tired, tight, overworked muscles. It is especially good for athletes, dancers and other people engaged in strenuous physical exercises. When used in the bath, it makes the skin single but could be an irritant to people with sensitive skin.

Contraindications
  • nursing mothers due to the mutagenic effect of its volatile component estragole (speculative)
  • infants or toddlers (speculative) due to the potentially toxic component estragole

Basil Active Ingredients

The flowery stems are the medicinal part. The constituents contain essential oil with linalool as the main compound as well as tannins, glycosides and saponin.

Basil Typical Dosage

Mix 1 teaspoon of dried herbs in half a cup of water. Strain. Drink 1 to 2 cups as needed daily, a mouthful at a time. It can be sweetened with honey if required for a cough. The essential oil can be inhaled, put in a base for massage oil or a few drops can be put in bath.

Basil Side Effects

In general, no health hazards or side effects are known in conjunction with the proper administration of designated therapeutic dosages. Because of the high estragole content in essential oil, the herb should not be taken during pregnancy or during lactation. Basil oil should not be given to infants or small children. Do not use the essential oil internally.
