Bayberry Historical Use

It was once used as a popular drug in American a substance used in managing discofort for its astringent, and tonic properties. Physicians used to prescribe a hot tea made from bayberry at the first sign of the cold, cough or flu in nineteenth century. This root bark was official from 1916-1936 in The National Formulary, as a decoction for diarrhea, dysentery, dropsy, uterine hemorrhage and as a gargle for sore throats. Poultices were used for external sores and An eroded sore in the inner lining of digestive tracks.

A bayberry is a familiar shrub found along the shores of New England. This plant is valued primarily for the wax from berries. Harder and more brittle than beeswax, the wax is not only used for candles but is one of the main ingredients in the hair tonic called Bay Rum. Both bayberry wax and dried bayberry bark are used medicinally. The bark is said to act as an astringent, drying and tightening the skin tissues. It also induces perspiration.

  • Hot compress – Pour bayberry tea on a towel and use as needed
