Burdock

Burdock is reputed to be a quintessential blood purifier and through this ability it can resolve skin and joint problems and eliminate excess water. In Japan it is called gobo and the root is sliced and steamed as a vegetable. Burdock is a native of Europe and can be found throughout the United States and Asia. The roots are the most often used part of this herb and are ingested with the seeds while the leaves are used as an external poultice.

Burdock root infusions have been shown in recent research to induce diuresis and to lower blood pressure. The lactone component is thought to be responsible for the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity.

Burdock roots and seeds can be made into a tincture using the first year roots and taking 10 to15 drops in water. A decoction can be made using one ounce of root in one pint of water and drinking 3 cups per day. Also the Japanese preparation of the fresh root as a vegetable is peel the root and slice with a carrot peeler and soak in fresh water and steam with carrot and tamari and a little sesame oil.

Burdock Side Effects

There seems to be no side effects from using the recommended dosages of burdock root. Pregnant women should use caution due to the estrogenic activity that burdock has been shown to have. High blood sugars using insulin might likewise be cautious, as there might be a need to adjust their insulin considering the blood sugar lowering properties burdock reportedly has demonstrated.
