Cardamom

Cardamom is a perennial with erect stems, 2-3 m high. The plant has downy leaves and flowers with a greenish-white corolla, containing a single fertile stamen set in the edge of the petals. The seeds are dark-reddish brown with a rough, wrinkled surface. Cardamom is found in southern India, Nepal, Guatemala, Mexico, Sri Lanka and Central America. The medicinal part is the oil extracted from the seeds and the fruit. The plant possesses antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative, expectorant, stomachic properties and is also used as a tonic.
