Elecampane

Elecampane grows in damp pastures and its flowers have a resemblance to the sunflower hence one of its common names "wild sunflower". The roots of elecampane could be considered specific for respiratory system complaints of every description from the common cold and coughs to bronchitis. Elecampane is native to Europe and Asia and now it is also grows in the Near East and North America. The roots and rhizomes of elecampane contain volatile oils and medicinal substances.

Used since the times of the Roman empire when it was called enula campania, while the ancient Greeks were said to have named it after Helen of Troy from whose tears the legend says gave birth to this herb, hence its Latin name Helenium. From this we know that this herb has been used a very long time, The traditional uses of elecampane include the entire spectrum of respiratory symptoms cough, whopping, cough, Problem due to narrowing of air passage, emphysema, and bronchitis. Its bitter substances were said to aid digestion and it was used as a stimulant to the gall bladder. The herb was said to rid the body of intestinal worms and function as a increased urination and aid menstruation.

Elecampane has been useful in treating coughs and aiding expectoration and its extracts have been incorporated into antitussives, cholagogues and one of its components alantolactone had been used in Europe as an antihelminitic prescription medication (to treat intestinal worms). Elecampane is reported to have anti-fungal and antibiotic action. The herb is said to be soothing for the cough and stimulate expectoration at the same time. 

Contraindications

  • allergic hypersensitivity resulting in contact dermatitis to its sesquiterpene lactone alantolactone or similar cross-reactive substances (empirical)4

Elecampane Active Constituents

Elecampane contains from 1 to 4% volatile oils including alantolactone and isoalanlolactone, which are sespuiterpene lactones, these type of compounds are said to posses anti-biotic, anti fungal and anti tumor properties. Elecampane also contains inulin, sterols and B-sitosterols and mucilage. The volatile oils are said to stimulate expectoration while the mucilaginous substances soothe and comfort the cough. Alantolactone is a prescription medication in parts of Europe that is said to rid the body of intestinal worms.

Elecampane Typical Dosage

The recommended method for making elecampane tea is to use one teaspoon of dried grated root to one cup of water into a covered pot and bring to a boil let sit for a 10 minutes then drink, up to 3 times per day. Using the tincture, add 2 ml to one cup of water up to 3 times per day.

Elecampane Side Effects

Elecampane is considered a safe herb when used in the recommended dosages. Large amounts of alantolactones are said to cause diarrhea and cramps. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this herb.
