Elecampane has been useful in treating coughs and aiding expectoration and its extracts have been incorporated into antitussives, cholagogues and one of its components alantolactone had been used in Europe as an antihelminitic prescription medication (to treat intestinal worms). Elecampane is reported to have anti-fungal and antibiotic action. The herb is said to be soothing for the cough and stimulate expectoration at the same time.
Contraindications
- allergic hypersensitivity resulting in contact dermatitis to its sesquiterpene lactone alantolactone or similar cross-reactive substances (empirical)4
