Goldenseal

Goldenseal is a small herbaceous perennial with a thick yellow root and an erect stem. It grows to a height of one foot. The plant is a native of Canada and the eastern United States. The chief States producing it being Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, New York. In Canada it mainly grows in the Province of Ontario. It is found in the rich soil of shady woods and moist places at the edge of wooded lands.

Root: ½ teaspoon of ground, dried and powdered root, boiled in a covered container in one pint of water for about 30 minutes at a slow boil. Allow liquid to cool slowly in the closed container. Drink cold, one swallow or one tablespoon at a time, a maximum of one cup per day for a length of time not to exceed one week. Capsules: Take one to two, up to three times daily.

This herb can raise blood pressure and should not be used by anyone with a history of high blood pressure. Do not use during pregnancy. Do not use for more than two weeks at a time. Eating the fresh plant can cause soreness of the mucous tissue.
