Damiana has complex and varied components. It has .5 to 1-% volatile oils, gonzalitosin (cyanigic glycoside), arbutin, tannin and damianin. Damiana's leaves also include beta-sterol, which it is reported may be responsible for its stimulant effect on sexual organs. Extracts of Damiana have demonstrated an ability to bind progesterone receptors suggesting its possible use in women's health problems.

Damiana Typical Dosage

The recommended dosages for Damiana, when using the dried leaves, is to use one gram in one cup of boiled water steep 10 minutes and drink as tea, this can be done 3 times per day. If using the liquid tincture of 1 to 1 strength in alcohol the recommended dosage is 2 to 4 ml per day.

Damiana Side Effects

Damiana leaves have some small laxative effect and the herb is considered safe in the recommended dosages. Some reported conditions in which the herb is contraindicated are; pregnancy, lactating women, diverticulitis, urinary tract Malfunction of mind or body and An eroded sore in the inner lining of digestive trackative colitis.
